Benefits of Dermaplaning

01

Exfoliation

By removing the top layer of dead skin cells, dermaplaning provides deep exfoliation that reveals fresher, more radiant skin. It promotes cell turnover, leaving the skin looking smoother and more youthful.

02

Smoother Skin Texture

The removal of dead skin and peach fuzz creates a smoother texture that not only feels soft but also allows makeup to be applied more evenly. Many clients find that their makeup looks more flawless after a dermaplaning treatment.

03

Brighter Complexion

Removing the build-up of dead skin cells can help to brighten the complexion and reduce the appearance of dull, tired-looking skin. Clients often notice an immediate glow after a dermaplaning session.

04

Improved Product Absorption

Without the barrier of dead skin and vellus hair, skincare products can penetrate more effectively, enhancing their efficacy. This makes dermaplaning an excellent treatment to pair with other facials that involve nourishing serums or hydrating masks.

05

Anti-Aging, Age Corrective

Regular dermaplaning treatments can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by promoting new skin cell growth. Over time, this can lead to a smoother, more youthful appearance.

06

Safe for Most Skin Types

While some exfoliation methods can irritate sensitive skin, dermaplaning is generally safe for most clients, including those with sensitive or reactive skin. However, it may not be recommended for clients with active acne or other inflamed skin conditions.

All About Dermaplaning in Naples

What is Dermaplaning and What does it do?

Dermaplaning is a highly effective skin care exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile, surgical-grade scalpel called a “butter blade,” especially made for the treatment. With featherlight strokes, the scalpel gently scrapes away the top layer of dead skin cells and peach fuzz, also known as vellus hair, from the surface of the skin. This method of exfoliation offers a smooth, vibrant, and youthful complexion, making it a popular choice for anyone looking to improve the overall appearance and texture of their skin.

Dermaplaning also creates a flawless canvas for makeup to glide on effortlessly and allows for deeper penetration of skin care products during your daily routine. Because dead skin cells and fine hair are removed during dermaplaning, the skin is more receptive to your skin care products, making serums, moisturizers, and masks work more efficiently.

What do you use to Perform a Dermaplaning Treatment?

Diana O'Donnell uses individually wrapped, sterile scalpel blades made especially for Dermaplaning. Made by Swann-Morton in England, the 10R scalpel, also known as the "Butter Blade" is the dermaplane blade of choice for experienced skin care professionals. Diana uses a new, sterile blade for each client's treatment.

The Dermaplaning Treatment Explained:

Dermaplaning is a straightforward and relatively quick procedure that involves these key steps:

1. Cleansing the Skin: Before the dermaplaning procedure begins, the skin is double-cleansed to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup. This ensures that the surface is clean and ready for exfoliation.

2. Prepping the Skin: After cleansing, the skin is dried thoroughly. This step is crucial for ensuring the scalpel glides smoothly over the skin without causing irritation.

3. The Dermaplaning Process: Using a sterile surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle, the dead skin cells and vellus hair are carefully and gently scraped away from the face. The scalpel is moved in short, feather-light strokes across the skin's surface, working in small sections to ensure precision and safety.

4. Hydration and Nourishment: Once the dermaplaning is complete the skin is more receptive to products, this is when nourishing ingredients are applied will deeply penetrate the skin.

5. Sun Protection: Because dermaplaning removes the outermost layer of skin, it is essential to apply sunscreen after the treatment. The newly revealed skin is more sensitive to UV rays, so proper sun protection is a must to avoid damage.

What to Expect During and After a Dermaplaning Facial or Express Treatment

Dermaplaning is a comfortable and relaxing experience for most clients. Many people describe the sensation as a gentle scraping with minimal to zero discomfort. After the treatment, clients typically notice an immediate improvement in their skin's texture and radiance. The skin may appear slightly pink or flushed right after the procedure, but this usually subsides within a few hours. Because the treatment is non-invasive, it is okay to return to regular activities immediately, with the exception of being out in the sun for an extended period of time. After the treatment, it is important to wear sunscreen daily, and avoid harsh exfoliants or peels for a few days afterwards.

Does hair grow back thicker after Dermaplaning?

Clients often receive Dermaplaning to temporarily rid their skin of fine peach fuzz (vellus hair), which grows back exactly the same as before. This non-surgical resurfacing treatment is perfect for almost all skin types, offers multiple benefits and is a gentle, well tolerated procedure.  However, there is a misconception that the vellus facial hair that is removed in the process will grow back thicker or darker. This is untrue and biologically impossible. Vellus facial hair is very different type of hair than other types of hair on our body. What someone may experience if it's their first time having dermaplaning performed is that they feel the vellus hair growing back. The feeling of the tiny hairs regrowing is a new sensation when they have never been removed.

Is there downtime after a Dermaplaning Facial?

No, there is no downtime after a  Dermaplaning and it's a perfect treatment prior to event or a photo session. It is a popular facial with Hollywood stars and models, as it creates a smooth canvas for makeup to be applied with a flawless finish.

  • If you are on blood thinner medication

  • Cuts, wounds, cold sores on the face

Ideal Candidates for Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is suitable for a wide range of skin types, but it is particularly beneficial for clients with:

- Dry or flaky skin

- Dull or tired-looking complexion

- Fine lines and wrinkles

- Uneven skin tone or texture

- Peach fuzz (vellus hair) that creates a barrier to smooth makeup application

- Non-inflammatory acne scars or hyperpigmentation

Clients with active acne, rosacea, or other inflammatory skin conditions should wait until their condition subsides before Dermaplaning. In these cases, alternative exfoliation methods are recommended.

Pairing Dermaplaning with Other Facial Treatments

Dermaplaning can be a standalone treatment, as a facial or an express treatment. However it is often combined with other facials or Hydrafacial to enhance its benefits. Some popular facial combinations include:

1. Dermaplaning and Hydrafacial: Pairing dermaplaning with a Hydrafacial offers deep exfoliation and hydration in one session. After the dermaplaning process removes dead skin cells and vellus hair, the Hydrafacial uses a multi-step process to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin. The result is a glowing, refreshed complexion that is both smooth and deeply nourished.

2. Dermaplaning and Chemical Peel: Dermaplaning before a chemical peel allows the peel to penetrate more effectively and evenly. By removing the top layer of dead skin cells, the chemical peel can work more efficiently, targeting issues like hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. This combination can result in a more intense exfoliation, leading to brighter, clearer skin.

3. Dermaplaning and LED Light Therapy: Combining dermaplaning with LED light therapy can enhance the results of both treatments. After dermaplaning exfoliates the skin, LED light therapy helps reduce inflammation, promote collagen production, and accelerate the skin's healing process. This combination is ideal for clients looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve overall skin health.

Common Myths About Dermaplaning

Despite its popularity, there are a few common myths about dermaplaning that may cause some hesitation for potential clients. Here are some of the most prevalent misconceptions:

Myth 1: Dermaplaning will cause hair to grow back thicker or darker. This is one of the most common concerns, but it is not true. The vellus hair removed during dermaplaning grows back at the same rate and thickness as before. Dermaplaning does not change the texture or color of the hair.

Myth 2: Dermaplaning is painful. While the thought of a scalpel on the face may sound intimidating, dermaplaning is a gentle and painless procedure. Most clients find it to be a relaxing experience.

Myth 3: Dermaplaning is the same as shaving. Although both involve the removal of hair with a blade, dermaplaning is a much more precise and controlled treatment performed by a trained professional. In addition to removing vellus hair, dermaplaning exfoliates the skin, providing a deeper level of rejuvenation.

How Often Should You Get a Dermaplaning Facial?

The frequency of dermaplaning facials depends on individual skin types and concerns. For most clients, dermaplaning can be performed every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain smooth, radiant skin. Regular treatments can help keep the skin looking fresh and youthful while also preventing the build-up of dead skin cells. Some clients like to schedule dermaplaning before special events, as the treatment provides an instant glow and creates the perfect canvas for makeup application.

Dermaplaning facials offer an exceptional way to achieve smooth, glowing skin without the need for invasive procedures or downtime. With its ability to deeply exfoliate and enhance the absorption of skincare products, dermaplaning is a versatile treatment that can be tailored to suit a variety of skin concerns. Whether you're looking for a quick pick-me-up or an addition to your regular skincare routine, dermaplaning provides immediate results that leave your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. This gentle, yet effective treatment is ideal for maintaining a youthful, radiant complexion.
